POLICY AND PRACTICE STATEMENT

Welcome. I hope our time together, either in person or through virtual connection, will be part of a journey of healing and growth for you and/or your family. I practice at a beautiful location we simply call “1820” or “A Center for the Healing Arts” here at 1820 Country Club Road in Harrisonburg, VA. The property is shared with other practitioners; we each have independent practices. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which means I have master’s level training in mental health counseling and am licensed to practice independently. I have held this license since 1992. Additionally, I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP); I have completed a 3-year certificate program in this approach. It includes and prioritizes the body’s experience in therapeutic work, recognizing that our nervous systems adapt to adverse experiences and form habits of response that are useful at the time but may get “stuck” in now unhelpful ways of responding. It facilitates release of these old response patterns and facilitates the growth of healthier ones. I also have post-master’s degree training in Depth Psychology, which looks at unconscious processes that inform our outlook and actions. Theories of attachment inform my work. I acknowledge that each of us function in the context of family and/or community, so look at the interaction between an individual and their environment. And most importantly, I believe the experience of having a space to thoroughly express oneself and be deeply heard are central to the healing process.

Confidentiality

Know that what you talk about here, and even the fact that you are seeking therapy here, is confidential. Please allow any friends or acquaintances you encounter here the same privacy by not discussing with others their use of counseling services.

Sometimes clients want me to talk to important other in their lives (physicians, family member, teachers, etc.), or maybe I’ll suggest that this would be helpful. In these instances, I will ask for your written permission to exchange information.

Of course, every rule has its exceptions. In the following situations I am mandated to break confidentiality:

  • If I believe a client is in danger of hurting themselves or another

  • If I learn of child abuse

  • If a judge orders me to provide information to the court

Also, in the unlikely case of a medical emergency, I would break confidentiality to access appropriate care. If you have any additional concerns about confidentiality, please ask me about them.

Payment Information:

My fee for an initial evaluation is $140. Subsequent sessions are $130 for hour-long sessions and $100 for 45-minute sessions. Most insurance companies reimburse for my counseling/psychotherapy services. I am a participating provider for the most common insurance plans in this area. Most insurance plans set their own “allowable” rates, which I follow (if lower than the stated rates) for the plans with which I participate. I will file claims for you if your insurance company is one with which I participate. This means that you will just owe your co-payment and/or deductible at the time of your appointment. (If for any reason your insurance company does not reimburse as we expect it to, you will be responsible for the balance.) If your insurance company is one with which I do not participate, that is to say I am an “out of network provider,” I will ask you to pay in full at the time of service and to file your own claim to your insurance company for reimbursement at the rate they determine. Please be in contact with your insurance company to understand what paperwork they require. I will provide you with documentation of the service provided and payment received to attach to their form when you submit it.

I ask that any cancellation of an appointment time be made at least 24 hours in advance so that I can adjust my schedule accordingly. I do have a $25 “no show” fee for late cancellations or no shows.

I look forward to working with you. Please ask me any remaining questions that you have.
